Patient question

When can I play football or padel again after an MCL injury?

Dr. Pablo GelberOrthopaedic Knee Surgeon

Quick answer

Return to sport after an MCL injury depends on the grade and on meeting clear milestones rather than a fixed date. Many players with a grade 1 sprain return within weeks, while grade 2 and 3 tears usually need one to three months of rehabilitation, explains Dr. Pablo Gelber, who treats sports knee injuries in Doha, Qatar.

Milestones before you go back

  • No looseness on the inner side when the surgeon tests the ligament
  • Full or near-full range of movement and no swelling after training
  • Strength in the thigh and hip muscles close to the uninjured side
  • Pain-controlled running, then sprinting and stopping
  • Confident cutting, side-stepping and single-leg hopping

Meeting these steps matters more than the number of weeks. Going back early is one of the commonest reasons for re-injury.

Football versus padel

Football places the MCL at risk from tackles and from planting the foot while kicking with the inside of the foot. Passing with the instep is often one of the last movements to become comfortable. A gradual return through training, small-sided games and then full matches is sensible.

Padel involves quick lateral movements, lunges and sudden stops on a short court, all of which load the inner knee. Players often start with gentle rallies, avoid diving for balls at first and build up to competitive matches.

Training safely in the Qatar climate

Fatigue and dehydration reduce muscle control and make knee injuries more likely. In the hotter months, plan rehab sessions and early matches at cooler times of day or on indoor courts, drink regularly and do not let a busy league calendar rush you back.

When to be reassessed

If the knee swells after sport, gives way or feels loose on the inside, stop and have it checked. At Aman Hospital, Dr. Gelber re-examines the ligament and works with your physiotherapist to adjust the plan, including whether a functional brace is worth using for the first period back.

Frequently asked questions

Should I play in a knee brace?

Some players use a functional brace for the first weeks back to contact sport. It can add confidence, but it does not replace strength, control and a fully healed ligament.

Can I go to the gym while I wait?

Usually yes, with guidance. Upper body work, core training and cycling can often continue, while deep loaded squats and side-to-side drills wait until the ligament is ready.
