Knee Surgery FAQs
Quick answer
These are the questions patients in Doha most often ask Dr. Pablo Gelber about knee injuries and knee surgery, covering ACL tears, meniscus tears, arthroscopy, recovery times and returning to sport. Every knee is different, so a consultation is needed for advice about your own knee.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I have torn my ACL?
A pop at the time of injury, rapid swelling within hours and a feeling that the knee gives way are typical. A clinical examination and an MRI confirm the diagnosis.
Can a torn meniscus heal on its own?
Small tears in the outer, well-supplied part of the meniscus can heal. Larger or displaced tears usually need repair, and degenerative tears are often treated first with physiotherapy.
How long after knee arthroscopy can I walk?
Most patients walk the same day or the next day. Return to work depends on the procedure performed and your job.
When can I return to football after ACL reconstruction?
Return to pivoting sports is usually at around 9 to 12 months, once strength and functional tests are passed. Returning earlier increases the risk of re-injury.
