Patient question
When can I play football or padel again after ACL reconstruction, and what tests do I need to pass?
Quick answer
Return to football or padel after ACL reconstruction is usually around 9 to 12 months, and only after passing strength, hop and movement tests. Returning earlier, or before those tests are passed, is linked to a higher risk of re-injury, explains Dr. Pablo Gelber, who follows athletes through ACL rehabilitation at Aman Hospital in Doha.
Why time alone is not enough
The graft goes through a long process of healing and remodelling inside the bone tunnels, and the leg muscles need many months to regain strength and control. Feeling good at six months is common, but feeling good is not the same as being ready. Many re-tears happen in people who returned early because the knee felt fine.
The usual stages back to sport
- Around 3 to 4 months: straight-line jogging, if strength and swelling allow
- Around 4 to 6 months: running drills, gradual jumping and landing practice
- Around 6 to 9 months: sport-specific drills, such as dribbling, controlled cutting or padel footwork without opponents
- Around 9 to 12 months: full training, then match play once tests are passed
Padel involves short, sharp pivots near walls and glass, and football adds tackles and unpredictable contact, so both are treated as high-demand pivoting sports.
Tests commonly used before return
- Quadriceps and hamstring strength close to the other leg, often measured on a machine
- Single-leg hop tests for distance and control
- Quality of landing and cutting, often filmed and reviewed
- No swelling after hard sessions, and full or near-full movement
- Psychological readiness and confidence in the knee
Your physiotherapist and Dr. Gelber review these results together at Aman Hospital before clearing you for full play.
Training in Qatar
During the summer, run and do drills in air-conditioned facilities or in the early morning. Continue an injury-prevention warm-up long after returning, as it lowers the risk to both knees.
Frequently asked questions
Can I go to the gym before returning to sport?
Yes. Gym strength work is a core part of rehabilitation from the early weeks, progressed by your physiotherapist.
Is the other knee at risk too?
Yes, people who have torn one ACL have a higher risk of injuring the other knee. Prevention exercises should train both legs.
