Patient question
Can I return to sport or manual work after multi-ligament knee surgery?
Quick answer
Many patients return to work and recreational sport after multi-ligament reconstruction, but it usually takes nine to twelve months or longer, and some do not return to high-level pivoting sport. Desk work comes back much sooner than heavy manual work, explains Dr. Pablo Gelber, who treats complex knee ligament injuries at Aman Hospital in Doha.
Returning to sport
Straight-line activities such as cycling, swimming and later jogging are usually reintroduced in the middle months of rehabilitation. Pivoting and contact sports such as football, padel and basketball come last, after strength, hopping and agility tests are close to the other leg and the surgeon is satisfied with stability.
Outcomes vary with the injury. A knee with two reconstructed ligaments and no nerve or cartilage damage has better prospects than one with an artery repair, nerve injury or significant cartilage loss. Some athletes choose lower-impact sports long term, and this is discussed openly before surgery.
Returning to work
- Office and desk-based roles: often within a few weeks, with the leg elevated, once pain is controlled and you can travel safely
- Roles with long standing or walking: usually after the brace is off and walking is steady
- Heavy manual work, climbing, ladders and scaffolding: commonly several months or more, and sometimes a permanent change of duties is advised
Workers on construction and industrial sites in Qatar often benefit from a phased return with written restrictions agreed with the employer.
Keeping the knee healthy long term
Ongoing strength work, sensible weight management and choosing activities that suit the reconstructed knee help protect it over the years. Training in the cooler hours or indoors during the Qatari summer helps maintain consistency without overheating. Annual or as-needed review with your surgeon can pick up any loosening or cartilage problems early.
Setting goals together
At Aman Hospital in Doha, Dr. Gelber asks about your sport, your job and what matters most to you before surgery, so that the plan, graft choices and rehabilitation milestones are aligned with realistic goals.
Frequently asked questions
Will I need a brace for sport?
Some patients use a functional brace in the first season back. It is optional for many and does not replace strength and control.
Can I do military or police fitness tests again?
Some patients do, but demanding fitness and duty requirements are assessed individually. A detailed report on your knee's function can help your employer make decisions.
