Patient question

How long is recovery after multi-ligament knee reconstruction?

Dr. Pablo GelberOrthopaedic Knee Surgeon

Quick answer

Recovery after multi-ligament reconstruction is long: usually around six weeks of protected weight bearing in a brace, several months to walk and climb stairs confidently, and nine to twelve months or more before demanding sport. The exact course depends on which ligaments were rebuilt, explains Dr. Pablo Gelber, who performs this surgery at Aman Hospital in Doha.

The first six weeks

The knee is held in a hinged brace and you use crutches, with limited or partial weight on the leg depending on the ligaments reconstructed. Physiotherapy starts early, focused on controlling swelling, regaining full straightening and gradually bending the knee within safe limits. After PCL reconstruction, a brace that supports the back of the shin may be used to protect the graft from sagging.

Blood clot prevention, wound care and pain control are planned before you leave hospital.

Six weeks to around four months

Crutches are usually weaned and the brace opened up or removed as healing progresses. Work focuses on walking without a limp, full range of motion, and steadily rebuilding thigh, hip and calf strength. Static cycling, pool exercises once wounds are healed and controlled gym work are typical.

Four months onward

Training moves to balance, jogging when cleared, and later agility and sport-specific drills. Progress is guided by examination, strength testing and how the knee responds, not by the calendar alone. Many patients continue to notice improvement for a year or more after surgery.

Planning recovery in Qatar

Long rehabilitation needs planning around work, family and climate. Desk-based work is often possible after a few weeks, while physically demanding jobs take considerably longer. Driving depends on which leg was operated on and whether you can control the car safely. Expatriate patients considering a long flight home in the early weeks should discuss timing and clot prevention in advance. Dr. Gelber and the rehabilitation team at Aman Hospital set out a written plan so you know what to expect at each stage.

Frequently asked questions

Why is recovery longer than after an ACL reconstruction?

More grafts need to heal at the same time, and the collateral and PCL reconstructions need longer protection. Stiffness is also a greater risk, so motion has to be regained carefully.

Can I pray normally during recovery?

Deep kneeling and sujood are restricted for several months while the grafts heal. Most patients pray seated on a chair at first and return to full positions gradually as bending improves.
