Patient question

When can I play padel or football again after bucket-handle surgery?

Dr. Pablo GelberOrthopaedic Knee Surgeon

Quick answer

After a bucket-handle repair, most players return to padel or football at around four to six months, once strength and control tests are passed, and later if the ACL was reconstructed. If the torn part was removed instead, return is often within weeks, explains Doha knee surgeon Dr. Pablo Gelber at Aman Hospital.

Why the wait is longer after repair

A stitched meniscus needs time for the torn edges to knit together, and that healing tissue is weakest when the knee is deeply bent and twisted, which is exactly what padel lunges and football cutting demand. Returning too early risks re-tearing the repair, and a second tear is often less repairable than the first.

Steps along the way

  • Cycling and pool work once the brace is off, usually from around six to eight weeks
  • Straight-line jogging on a treadmill or track, often from around three months if the knee is calm
  • Agility, jumping and change-of-direction drills as strength improves
  • Sport-specific practice without contact or competition
  • Full matches once your surgeon and physiotherapist are satisfied

What return-to-sport tests look at

Rather than a date on the calendar, the decision rests on the knee being calm without swelling, full or near-full movement, thigh strength close to the other leg, and confident hopping and landing. Physiotherapists in Doha commonly use hop tests and strength measurements to judge this.

Playing safely in Qatar

In the hotter months, evening or indoor padel courts and air-conditioned training reduce fatigue, which is when knees tend to get injured. Warm up properly, build match time gradually and keep up a strength programme after you return. Dr. Gelber reviews progress at Aman Hospital in Doha before clearing you for competitive play.

Frequently asked questions

Should I wear a brace when I go back to padel?

A brace is not usually required after a healed meniscus repair. Strength and control matter more, although some players like a sleeve for confidence.

Will I be at risk of tearing it again?

There is some risk of re-tear, particularly in the first year. Completing rehabilitation and returning gradually help reduce it.
