Patient question
What does recovery look like, week by week, after a bucket-handle repair?
Quick answer
After a bucket-handle repair, the knee is usually protected for about six weeks with a brace, limited bending and crutches, then strengthened over the following months. In Doha, Dr. Pablo Gelber typically expects normal daily activities by around three months, with exact timings depending on the repair and any ACL surgery.
Weeks 0 to 2
The focus is controlling swelling and getting the knee fully straight. You will usually wear a hinged brace and use crutches, with weight-bearing guided by your surgeon. Ice, elevation and simple exercises such as tightening the thigh muscle and ankle pumps start straight away. Bending is limited, often to around 90 degrees, so the stitches are not stressed. Wounds are kept dry until they are checked.
Weeks 2 to 6
Physiotherapy builds muscle control while the repair heals. Deep bending, squatting and twisting are avoided. Many people with desk jobs return to work during this period, with the leg elevated where possible. Driving is usually possible only once you are off crutches and can brake hard safely, and later for a right knee than a left knee in an automatic car. Check your insurance terms too.
Weeks 6 to 12
The brace and crutches are usually stopped, bending is gradually increased and you work on a normal walking pattern. Exercise bikes, pool walking and controlled strengthening are introduced. Deep loaded squats, sitting on the floor and sujood are generally still avoided until your surgeon is satisfied with progress.
Month 3 onwards
Strength, balance and running drills progress step by step. Return to pivoting sport is usually not before around four to six months, and later if the ACL was reconstructed at the same time. Manual and industrial workers may need modified duties for longer.
Call the clinic at Aman Hospital in Doha urgently if you develop fever, increasing redness or discharge from the wounds, calf pain and swelling, or a sudden new locking episode.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I bend my knee fully straight away?
Deep bending squeezes the back of the meniscus and can pull the stitches apart before the tear has healed. The limit is temporary.
Is recovery quicker if the torn part was removed instead?
Yes. After trimming, most people walk normally within days and return to light sport within weeks, because there is no repair to protect.
