Patient question
What warning signs after meniscus repair mean I should call my surgeon?
Quick answer
After meniscus repair, call your surgeon promptly for fever, increasing redness or discharge from a wound, a hot knee with worsening pain, or a swollen, tender calf; chest pain or breathlessness needs emergency care. Most other discomfort is normal healing, explains Dr. Pablo Gelber, knee surgeon at Aman Hospital in Doha.
What is normal in the first weeks
- Swelling around the knee that is worse in the evening and better after elevation
- Bruising that tracks down towards the shin or ankle
- Aching, especially at night, that gradually eases
- Tightness when bending and a weak, wobbly feeling in the thigh
- A small numb patch of skin beside one of the incisions
Signs of possible infection
Infection after arthroscopic meniscus repair is uncommon, but it needs early treatment. Call the team if you have a temperature, chills, a wound that becomes red, hot or starts to discharge cloudy fluid, or knee pain that worsens after the first few days rather than improving. An infected joint is often very painful to move even slightly.
Signs of a blood clot
A deep vein thrombosis typically causes a calf that is swollen, tight, warm or tender, sometimes with pain on walking or flexing the foot. Seek same-day care if you notice this. Sudden breathlessness, chest pain or coughing blood can mean a clot has travelled to the lungs and needs emergency treatment. Moving the ankles regularly, walking as allowed, drinking well and any blood-thinning medication prescribed for you all lower the risk.
Nerve irritation and other issues
Inside-out repairs of the medial meniscus use a small incision near the saphenous nerve, and some patients notice tingling or numbness along the inner shin, which often improves over months. Persistent burning pain, a knee that will not straighten, or swelling that keeps returning should also be reviewed. Patients of Dr. Gelber in Doha are given contact details for questions after surgery.
Frequently asked questions
Is it normal for the knee to feel warm after surgery?
Mild warmth is common for a few weeks, especially after exercise. A knee that becomes hotter, redder and more painful, particularly with fever, should be checked the same day.
Does the heat in Qatar affect wound healing?
Sweating under a brace or dressing can soften the skin. Keep wounds clean and dry, change dressings as advised, and stay in cool environments during the first weeks.
