Patient question

I am having meniscus repair in Doha. When can I fly home?

Dr. Pablo GelberOrthopaedic Knee Surgeon

Quick answer

Short flights are often possible within one to two weeks of meniscus repair, while long-haul journeys are usually better delayed for around two weeks or more because of blood clot risk and swelling. Planning seating, clot prevention and physiotherapy at your destination matters, explains Dr. Pablo Gelber, knee surgeon at Aman Hospital in Doha, Qatar.

Why timing matters

Surgery and immobility both increase the risk of a deep vein thrombosis, and sitting still for many hours in a cramped seat adds to it. The knee also swells more at altitude and when the leg hangs down. Waiting until the wounds are checked, swelling is settling and you are moving confidently on crutches makes the journey safer and more comfortable. The exact advice depends on your repair, your health and your clot risk.

Planning your stay in Doha

  • Allow time for the first wound check and early physiotherapy sessions before travelling
  • Ask for a written summary of the operation, your weight-bearing and bending limits and your rehabilitation protocol to take with you
  • Arrange a physiotherapist at home before you leave, so rehabilitation continues without a gap
  • Plan follow-up, either a return visit to Doha or a review arranged with Dr. Gelber's team

On the flight

Request an aisle seat or extra legroom, and ask the airline in advance for wheelchair or assistance at the airports, which saves long walks on crutches. Wear a compression stocking if advised, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and sleeping tablets, and pump your ankles every half hour. Walk the aisle when it is safe. If you have been prescribed blood-thinning medication, take it as instructed.

After you arrive

Expect the knee to be more swollen for a day or two after a long flight; elevate it and use ice. Seek urgent care for a painful swollen calf, chest pain or breathlessness. Continue the protocol exactly as written, because a meniscus repair needs the same protection wherever you are.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a letter to fly after surgery?

Some airlines ask for a fitness-to-fly note after recent surgery, particularly if you need assistance or extra legroom. Check with your airline and ask for a letter at your post-operative visit.

Can I wear my brace on the plane?

Yes, if it is part of your protocol. Loosen the straps slightly during the flight if your leg swells, and keep the knee straight or gently bent as allowed.
