Patient question
What is recovery like after a tibial tubercle osteotomy, week by week?
Quick answer
Most people use crutches with limited weight on the leg for around six weeks while the bone heals, then rebuild strength over the following months. Sport usually returns between six and nine months, depending on X-ray healing and strength, says Doha knee surgeon Dr. Pablo Gelber of Aman Hospital.
The first six weeks: protecting the bone
- A brace is often worn, locked straight for walking at first
- Crutches with partial weight-bearing, as advised by your surgeon
- Gentle bending exercises, increased step by step
- Thigh muscle activation, ankle pumps and swelling control
- Blood clot prevention, which may include medication and early movement
The main risk in this phase is overloading the healing bone, so follow the weight-bearing instructions closely.
Weeks six to twelve: back on two feet
Once an X-ray shows the bone is healing, most people move to full weight and leave the crutches and brace. Static cycling, pool work once wounds have healed and progressive strengthening start. Desk-based work is often possible from around this stage, or earlier with adjustments.
Three to nine months: strength and sport
Running usually starts after three to four months if the knee is calm and strong. Change-of-direction drills, jumping and sport-specific training follow. Football, padel and basketball are generally resumed between six and nine months, once strength and confidence tests are met.
If an MPFL reconstruction or cartilage procedure was done at the same time, the plan is adjusted to protect those as well.
Practical life in Doha
Plan help at home for the first weeks, a shower chair and a raised seat. For prayer, many patients use a chair while kneeling is restricted; you can discuss the religious side with a scholar. Driving waits until you can brake firmly and are off strong painkillers. Follow-up visits at Aman Hospital check wound healing, X-rays and progress.
Frequently asked questions
What warning signs should make me call the hospital?
Fever, increasing redness or discharge from the wound, calf pain or swelling, chest pain or breathlessness, or a sudden crack or pain at the front of the shin. Breathlessness or chest pain needs emergency care.
Can I fly home during recovery?
Long flights in the early weeks increase the risk of blood clots and are awkward with a straight brace. Discuss dates with your surgeon before booking.
