Patient question
Can I go back to padel, golf or the gym after a partial knee replacement?
Quick answer
Many people return to swimming, cycling, golf, gym training and even social padel after a partial knee replacement, often sooner than after a total knee. Low-impact activity is encouraged; running and jumping sports add wear and need caution. Timing depends on healing and strength, advises Dr. Pablo Gelber, knee surgeon at Aman Hospital in Doha.
Why a partial knee often suits active people
Because the cruciate ligaments and the healthy parts of the knee are kept, many patients describe a partial knee as feeling more natural, and movement and balance often recover well. That makes it a common choice for active people with one-sided arthritis. It is still an implant, though, and the plastic bearing wears with impact over the years.
Usual timeframes
- Stationary cycling: often within the first few weeks, as soon as the knee bends enough
- Swimming: once the wound has fully healed, usually after a few weeks
- Gym with machines and light weights: gradually from around six weeks
- Golf: chipping and putting from about six to eight weeks, full swing usually around three months
- Doubles padel or tennis: usually not before about three months, and only with good strength and balance
- Running and jumping sports: generally discouraged long term
Padel in Qatar
Padel is very popular in Doha and many patients ask about it. Social doubles at a gentle pace is possible for some, but the quick stops, lunges and twisting load the knee more than golf or cycling. Start with short sessions, warm up well, wear proper court shoes, and play indoors or at cooler hours in summer. Stop if the knee swells after play and discuss it at follow-up.
Signs you are doing too much
Some aching after a new activity is normal. Swelling that persists into the next day, pain that increases week by week or a feeling of instability means you should reduce the load and contact your surgeon. A sudden painful click or locking also needs review.
Planning your return in Doha
At Aman Hospital, Dr. Gelber and the physiotherapy team review your progress and set a staged return plan based on strength, movement and the sport you enjoy, so you get back to it safely.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do squats in the gym?
Partial squats with good form are usually fine once strength returns. Deep loaded squats and heavy leg press put high stress on the implant and should be limited.
Can I play football again?
Competitive football is generally not advised because of tackles, twisting and impact. Light kick-about with family may be possible; discuss it with your surgeon.
