Patient question

How do I pray, drive and work after a knee tendon repair?

Dr. Pablo GelberOrthopaedic Knee Surgeon

Quick answer

After a knee tendon repair, the leg is usually kept in a brace with limited bending for around six weeks, so daily routines need adapting: praying seated on a chair, avoiding driving with a braced right leg, and planning desk work first. Timings depend on your repair, explains Dr. Pablo Gelber, knee surgeon at Aman Hospital in Doha.

Prayer

Kneeling, sujood and sitting on the floor are not possible in the early weeks because they bend the knee too far and strain the repair. Many patients pray seated on a chair with the leg supported straight. As bending is gradually allowed, usually over the following months, floor positions can be reintroduced carefully, often with a cushion. For questions about the religious ruling on how to pray during recovery, please speak to a scholar.

Driving

You should not drive while the leg is in a brace, taking strong painkillers or unable to brake firmly and quickly. If the left knee was repaired and you drive an automatic car, driving may be possible sooner, once you are off strong medicines and can get in and out safely. A right-sided repair usually means waiting until the brace is off and strength has returned, often around two to three months. Check your insurance policy too.

Work

  • Desk work: often possible after two to four weeks, with the leg elevated and a way to get to work safely
  • Standing or walking jobs: usually later, once the brace is unlocked and walking is comfortable
  • Manual, site or industrial work: often several months, as heavy lifting, climbing and kneeling stress the tendon

A letter for your employer outlining restrictions can help arrange modified duties.

Home life

Sleep with the brace on unless told otherwise. Showering usually means keeping the wound dry with a cover and sitting on a shower chair. Clear trip hazards, use a rail on stairs and keep frequently used things within reach. In Qatar's heat, a brace can feel hot and sweaty, so keep the skin under it clean and dry and report any wound changes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the toilet normally?

A raised toilet seat or frame helps, because low seats and squat toilets bend the knee too far in the early weeks.

When can I sit in the majlis on the floor?

Usually only once good bending and strength have returned, often several months after repair. Use a chair or firm cushion until then.
