Patient question

How long does recovery take after a knee tendon repair?

Quick answer

Most people walk in a brace with crutches straight after a quadriceps or patellar tendon repair, bend the knee gradually over the first two to three months, and return to normal daily activities by around four to six months. Sport often takes six months to a year, explains Doha knee surgeon Dr. Pablo Gelber.

The first six weeks: protect the repair

The knee is kept in a hinged brace, locked straight for walking. You can usually put weight on the leg with crutches from the start, because a straight knee places little strain on the repair. Bending is introduced gradually, often in limited ranges set by the surgeon, and increased every week or two.

The priorities are wound healing, controlling swelling, keeping the quadriceps switched on with gentle tightening exercises, and preventing stiffness. Avoid lifting the straight leg against resistance or squatting until you are told it is safe.

Six weeks to three months: regain movement

The brace is unlocked and then weaned as control improves. Most patients aim for a comfortable range that allows stairs and sitting on a chair. Physiotherapy shifts towards strengthening the quadriceps, hips and calf, balance work and a normal walking pattern without crutches.

Three to six months and beyond: rebuild strength

Strength takes the longest to return. Cycling, swimming and progressive gym work build the thigh back up. Jogging is usually considered once strength and control are good, often around four to six months. Jumping, football, padel and basketball typically come later, after testing, and some patients notice that full power takes up to a year.

Daily life in Qatar

Driving an automatic car is usually possible once the brace is off and you can brake firmly, earlier if it is the left knee. Office work often resumes within a few weeks with the leg supported; manual and site work takes longer. Prayer positions that load a deeply bent knee, such as sujood and sitting on the floor, come back late, so praying on a chair is a sensible bridge. Long flights in the first weeks need a discussion about blood clot prevention.

Frequently asked questions

Will my knee bend fully again?

Most patients regain a functional range. A small loss of full bend is possible, which is why supervised, gradual bending matters in the first months.

Can the tendon tear again?

Re-rupture is uncommon but can happen, usually from a fall or forceful load before the repair has matured. Following the brace and exercise plan reduces that risk.
