Patient question
How long does it take to recover from MPFL reconstruction?
Quick answer
Most people walk without crutches within a few weeks, return to desk work in about two weeks and to sport at around four to six months, depending on any added procedures and how rehabilitation goes. Dr. Pablo Gelber, knee surgeon at Aman Hospital in Doha, sets each patient's timeline after surgery.
A typical timeline
- Day of surgery: walking with crutches, often allowed to put weight on the leg with a brace locked straight
- Weeks one to two: wound care, controlling swelling, regaining full straightening and quadriceps activation
- Weeks two to six: bending increased step by step, crutches gradually reduced, brace usually unlocked or discontinued
- Weeks six to twelve: normal walking, stationary cycling, strengthening and balance work
- Months three to four: jogging and more demanding gym exercises
- Months four to six and beyond: agility, jumping and sport-specific training, then return to full sport once tests are passed
Work, driving and daily routines
Desk-based work is often possible after about two weeks, sometimes from home earlier. Jobs involving standing, walking or climbing usually need longer, and heavy manual or industrial work may need several months. Driving an automatic car after a left knee operation may be possible sooner than after a right knee operation; you should be off strong painkillers and able to brake firmly in an emergency.
What can lengthen recovery
If a tibial tubercle osteotomy or cartilage repair is done at the same time, weight-bearing and bending are usually restricted for longer to protect the healing bone or cartilage. Stiffness, persistent swelling or difficulty switching the quadriceps back on can also slow progress, which is why early, regular physiotherapy matters.
Follow-up at Aman Hospital
Dr. Gelber reviews the wound and early movement in the first weeks, then checks strength, stability and confidence at later visits. Return to sport is agreed together with your physiotherapist, using strength and hop tests rather than the date alone.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fly home after MPFL surgery?
Short flights are often possible after the first couple of weeks with your surgeon's agreement. For long-haul travel, ask about blood clot prevention, an aisle seat and moving regularly during the flight.
When can I swim?
Usually once the wounds have fully healed, often around two to four weeks. Avoid breaststroke kicks and twisting until your physiotherapist allows them.
