Patient question

Can I play football or padel again after my kneecap dislocated?

Dr. Pablo GelberOrthopaedic Knee Surgeon

Quick answer

Most people do return to football, padel and the gym. After physiotherapy alone it is often around three months, and after stabilising surgery commonly four to six months or more, but readiness is judged by strength, control and confidence rather than the date, says Dr. Pablo Gelber, knee surgeon at Aman Hospital, Doha.

Why these sports are demanding for the kneecap

Football and padel both involve sudden stops, side steps and pivoting on a planted foot with the knee bent, which is exactly the position in which the kneecap tends to slip out. Basketball, futsal and dance are similar. Straight-line running, cycling and swimming put far less sideways stress on the kneecap, so they usually come back first.

The usual steps back

  • Full straightening, comfortable bending and no swelling after exercise
  • Gym strength work for the quadriceps, hamstrings and hip muscles, progressing to single-leg exercises
  • Straight-line jogging, then faster running
  • Hopping, landing and side-to-side drills with good knee control
  • Sport-specific practice without contact, such as passing drills or padel rallies at a gentle pace
  • Full training, then matches

How readiness is checked

Your physiotherapist or surgeon usually compares the strength of the injured leg with the other side, watches how you hop and land, and asks how confident you feel. Apprehension, the fear that the kneecap is about to go, is an important sign. Returning while still apprehensive is a common reason for another episode.

A soft kneecap brace or taping may help confidence in early matches, but it is a supplement to strength, not a substitute.

Playing safely in Qatar

In the summer months, train indoors or late in the evening, keep well hydrated and build up gradually, because fatigue reduces muscle control. On padel courts, good footwear with grip suited to the surface helps. If the knee keeps slipping despite good rehabilitation, Dr. Gelber at Aman Hospital in Doha can discuss whether MPFL reconstruction would give you a stable knee for sport.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose my place in the team?

Missing a few months is frustrating, but a rushed return risks another dislocation and more time out. Many players use the period to build strength that benefits their game.

Can I keep going to the gym in the meantime?

Usually yes, with upper body and core work early on, and leg exercises added as your physiotherapist allows. Avoid deep loaded squats and twisting until cleared.
