Patient question

When can I drive and go back to work after a high tibial osteotomy?

Dr. Pablo GelberOrthopaedic Knee Surgeon

Quick answer

Most people return to desk work within about two to six weeks of a high tibial osteotomy and drive once they are off crutches and can brake safely, often around six to eight weeks for the right leg. Manual and site work usually needs three months or more, advises Dr. Pablo Gelber, knee surgeon at Aman Hospital, Doha.

Driving

You should only drive when you can walk without crutches, bend the knee comfortably and press the brake hard in an emergency without hesitation. For a right-leg osteotomy this is commonly around six to eight weeks. After a left-leg operation, driving an automatic car may be possible sooner, once you are off strong painkillers and can get in and out of the car safely.

You are responsible for being fit to drive. It is also sensible to check with your insurer, as policies differ on driving after surgery.

Returning to work

  • Office or remote work: often two to six weeks, with the leg elevated and regular short walks
  • Jobs with a lot of standing or walking, such as teaching or retail: often around two to three months
  • Manual, site, oil and gas or industrial work involving ladders, heavy lifting or uneven ground: commonly three to six months

A phased return, with lighter duties at first, makes the transition easier. Your employer may need a medical report from Aman Hospital to arrange this.

Stairs, prayer and home life

In the early weeks, go up stairs with the good leg first and down with the operated leg first, using the handrail and crutches. Praying seated on a chair is usual while you are on crutches; sujood and floor sitting are usually reintroduced once the bone is healing well and the knee bends comfortably. Shower seats, a raised toilet seat and removing loose rugs make the first weeks at home safer.

Plan ahead

Before your surgery date, discuss your job, commute and family responsibilities with Dr. Gelber. Arranging sick leave, help at home and transport to physiotherapy in advance takes much of the stress out of recovery, especially for expatriates without family nearby.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take a taxi or ride-hailing car to physiotherapy?

Yes. Sit in the front passenger seat pushed fully back, or across the back seat, so the leg can stay comfortable.

Can I work from home in the first week?

Some people can manage short periods of computer work in the first week, but pain medicine and swelling often make it tiring. Plan for rest first.
