Patient question
When can I go back to padel or football after knee arthroscopy?
Quick answer
After a simple arthroscopy, such as a meniscus trim, many players return to padel or football in about four to eight weeks once swelling has settled and strength is back. After a meniscus repair it is usually four to six months, and after ACL reconstruction longer, explains Dr. Pablo Gelber, knee surgeon at Aman Hospital in Doha.
Why the procedure sets the timeline
Padel and football both involve sudden stops, side steps and pivoting on a bent knee, which load the menisci and ligaments more than straight-line running. After a trim, the remaining meniscus is intact and the limit is how quickly swelling settles and the thigh regains strength. After a repair, the stitched tissue needs months to heal strongly enough for twisting. After a reconstruction, the new graft goes through a long phase of remodelling, and returning too early is a major cause of re-injury.
Your operation note says exactly what was done, so ask your surgeon which category you are in.
The usual stages after a simple arthroscopy
- Weeks one to two: walking normally, full straightening, swelling control, thigh and hip exercises
- Weeks two to four: static bike, pool walking or swimming with a straight-leg kick, gym strength work
- Weeks four to six: straight-line jogging if the knee stays quiet the next day, then change-of-direction drills
- From about weeks six to eight: graded return to padel or football training, then matches
A useful rule is that each new step should not make the knee swell or ache more the following morning. If it does, go back a step for a few days.
Signs you are ready
Dr. Gelber and your physiotherapist look for a knee without recurrent swelling, full movement, thigh strength close to the other side, and confidence in hopping, landing and cutting. Feeling no pain is not enough on its own, because strength often lags behind comfort.
In Qatar, plan training for indoor courts or cooler evening hours in summer. Heat, dehydration and fatigue make sloppy landings more likely in a knee that is still recovering.
Frequently asked questions
Should I wear a knee brace for padel after arthroscopy?
Most people do not need one after a simple arthroscopy. A brace does not replace strength and control. After some ligament procedures a brace may be used for a period, as advised by your surgeon.
My knee swells after padel matches since the arthroscopy. What does that mean?
It usually means the knee is not yet ready for that level of load. Reduce match play, keep strengthening, and book a review if it continues beyond a few weeks.
