Patient question

Can I keep working on site in Qatar with a torn ACL?

Quick answer

Many people with a torn ACL can do desk or light work, but ladders, scaffolding, uneven ground and carrying loads are risky if the knee gives way, both for the knee and for falls. Whether you can return depends on stability and the job, explains Dr. Pablo Gelber, knee surgeon at Aman Hospital in Doha.

Why site work is different

Construction, oil and gas, logistics and maintenance work often involve turning on a planted foot, stepping down from vehicles, walking on rubble or sand, and climbing. These are exactly the movements that make an ACL-deficient knee shift. A giving-way episode at height can cause a serious fall, so safety comes before the knee itself.

In the first weeks after injury

  • Rest from heavy and climbing duties while the swelling settles
  • Ask for temporary light or ground-level duties if your employer offers them
  • Use crutches until you walk without a limp
  • Start physiotherapy early to restore movement and thigh strength
  • Avoid working at heights or operating heavy machinery while the knee is unstable or you are taking strong painkillers

Going back to full duties

Some workers regain enough control with rehabilitation to return safely, especially in jobs with mostly straight-line walking. Others keep having episodes of giving way, and for them reconstruction is often recommended to make the knee stable enough for the job. The decision depends on examination, your role and any meniscus damage, not on the MRI alone.

Heat and recovery

Summer work in Qatar brings heat stress and fatigue, and fatigue reduces muscle control around the knee. Keep hydrated, follow the midday work restrictions and report any new swelling. If the knee gives way at work, stop and have it reviewed. Dr. Gelber can provide a medical report on fitness for duties after examining you at Aman Hospital.

Frequently asked questions

Will a brace make it safe to climb ladders?

A brace may help confidence, but it does not reliably stop a truly unstable knee from giving way. Discuss climbing duties with your surgeon and employer.

How long off work after ACL reconstruction for a manual job?

Manual and climbing work usually takes several months, depending on the job and progress in rehabilitation. Your surgeon and physiotherapist will advise stage by stage.
