When can I drive in Doha and go back to work after ACL surgery?

What decides when you can drive

You need to be able to brake hard and suddenly without hesitation, get in and out of the car easily, and be off strong painkillers that cause drowsiness. Most cars in Qatar are automatics, so after left-knee surgery many people can drive once walking is comfortable. After right-knee surgery, the operated leg controls the pedals, so more time is usually needed.

Try sitting in the car and pressing the brake firmly while parked before driving on the road. Start with short, quiet journeys before busy roads and highways.

Insurance and responsibility

Returning to work

• Desk or office work: often within one to three weeks, with the leg raised under the desk and short walks every hour

• Working from home earlier is possible for many office roles

Getting the paperwork right
