Patient question

When is a second opinion on knee surgery worth getting?

Dr. Pablo GelberOrthopaedic Knee Surgeon

Quick answer

A second opinion is most useful before major or irreversible surgery such as knee replacement, osteotomy or revision ligament surgery, when the diagnosis or benefit is unclear, or when a knee is still troublesome after a previous operation. It is also reasonable whenever you simply want more confidence, says Dr. Pablo Gelber, knee surgeon at Aman Hospital in Doha.

Common situations where it helps

  • Before knee replacement, partial replacement or osteotomy, where the choice of procedure shapes the rest of your life with that knee
  • When surgery has been recommended for a degenerate meniscus tear or early arthritis, where non-surgical care is often effective
  • Before revision surgery for a failed ACL reconstruction or a recurrent problem
  • When the knee is still painful, stiff, swollen or unstable months after an operation
  • When symptoms and scan findings do not seem to match
  • When you have been offered several different options and are unsure which suits you
  • For young athletes, where decisions about growth plates and return to sport need care

When it is less likely to change things

For some injuries the treatment pathway is well established and time matters, for example a locked knee from a bucket-handle meniscus tear, a ruptured quadriceps or patellar tendon, a displaced fracture or a dislocated kneecap with a loose fragment. A second opinion is still your right, but it should be arranged within days rather than weeks.

A second opinion is also not usually necessary for a straightforward problem where you already understand and agree with the plan.

Problems after a previous operation

If your knee is not improving as expected after surgery, the first step is usually to speak with your operating surgeon, who knows exactly what was done. If you still have concerns, a second opinion can look at the knee with fresh eyes. Dr. Gelber reviews the operation notes, arthroscopy images, and before-and-after scans, examines the knee carefully and, where needed, arranges further imaging to understand why recovery has stalled.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a second opinion if I have already had surgery?

Yes. Many second opinions are about knees that are still troublesome after an operation. Bring the operation notes and all scans taken before and after the surgery.

Is a second opinion only for surgery?

No. It can also help if you have been told surgery is not needed but your symptoms are not improving, or if you want guidance on injections or rehabilitation.
