Patient question
When can I pray on the floor again after meniscus repair?
Quick answer
After meniscus repair, full floor prayer with deep kneeling and sitting on the heels is usually delayed for around three to four months, because deep bending under body weight pulls on the healing stitches. Praying seated, then on the floor with support, bridges the gap, advises Dr. Pablo Gelber, knee surgeon at Aman Hospital in Doha.
Why prayer positions wait
Sujood and the sitting positions of prayer take the knee into its deepest bend while it carries body weight. That is exactly the load a meniscus repair, usually at the back of the meniscus, is protected from in the early months. Kneeling directly on the knee can also press on healing incisions. The repaired tissue gains strength gradually, so the return to these positions is planned in stages rather than all at once.
The usual stages
- First weeks: pray seated on a chair, with the operated leg straight or comfortably bent and the brace on if advised
- Around six to eight weeks: standing and bowing are usually comfortable; sujood and sitting are still done from the chair
- Around three months: if the knee is quiet and bending well, begin floor prayer with a firm cushion under the buttocks and the operated leg kept partly extended
- Around four months and beyond: gradually return to full sitting on the heels as comfort allows
Root repairs and repairs combined with ACL surgery may follow a slower timeline.
Making prayer easier during recovery
Place a stable chair near the prayer area at home, and keep a non-slip mat under it. At the mosque, a chair at the end of a row lets you rise without twisting. In Ramadan, longer taraweeh prayers can be performed seated during the early months. Many patients pray seated when there is genuine difficulty, and often find it reassuring to ask their local imam about the ruling.
Planning around your repair
Dr. Gelber discusses prayer and floor sitting with patients at Aman Hospital in Doha before surgery, so the plan fits daily life from the start. Your physiotherapist can practise the movements with you, such as getting down to and up from the floor safely, once you are cleared.
Frequently asked questions
Can I sit cross-legged in the majlis after meniscus repair?
Cross-legged sitting combines deep bending with rotation and is usually delayed for about four months. Sit on a chair or the edge of a sofa until then.
Is it harmful if I forgot and knelt once?
A single brief kneel is unlikely to damage a repair, but tell your physiotherapist if it caused pain or swelling, and return to your restrictions.
