Patient question

Is it true that knee replacements only last ten years and leave you unable to walk properly?

Quick answer

No. Most modern knee replacements last well beyond ten years, and the large majority of patients walk better, not worse, after recovery. Age alone rarely rules surgery out, and you do not need to wait until pain is unbearable. These are some of the most common myths, says Dr. Pablo Gelber, knee surgeon at Aman Hospital in Doha.

Myth: a new knee only lasts ten years

Large joint registries show that most knee replacements are still working at 15 to 20 years, and many last longer. Implant life depends on your age and activity level, body weight, and how well the components were positioned. Younger, very active patients do have a higher chance of needing a revision during their lifetime, which is why timing is discussed carefully.

Myth: I am too old for surgery

Chronological age matters less than general health. Fit patients in their eighties can have a replacement safely and benefit greatly. What matters is heart and lung health, diabetes control, kidney function and the ability to take part in rehabilitation. A pre-operative assessment identifies risks and how to reduce them.

Myth: you will be bedridden for weeks

Most patients stand and walk with a frame or crutches on the day of surgery or the next day. Hospital stays are usually short, and most people are walking independently within a few weeks. The full benefit takes months, but early movement is a central part of modern recovery.

More beliefs worth correcting

  • You do not have to wait until the pain is unbearable; persistent limitation despite good non-surgical care is enough to discuss it
  • A replacement does not set off airport scanners in a way that stops you travelling; you simply mention it at security
  • Kneeling is usually possible, though often uncomfortable on a hard floor
  • The whole knee is not removed; only the worn surfaces are resurfaced
  • Physiotherapy is not optional; it shapes the result as much as the operation

Frequently asked questions

Will I feel the metal in my knee?

Most people stop noticing the implant over time. Some feel a click or numbness near the scar, which is usually harmless.

Can I still have an MRI after a knee replacement?

Yes, modern knee implants are generally safe in MRI scanners. The metal does affect image quality around the knee itself, so other scans are often used for the knee.
