Patient question
How long before I can walk after a tibial plateau fracture?
Quick answer
Most people use crutches with little or no weight on the leg for around six to twelve weeks, then build up to walking without support over the following weeks. Full recovery commonly takes six months to a year, depending on the fracture, explains Dr. Pablo Gelber, who manages these injuries at Aman Hospital in Doha, Qatar.
Why weight-bearing is delayed
The plateau is the surface you stand on. Even when it has been lifted back into place and fixed with plates and screws, putting full weight on it too early can make the repaired surface sink again. The bone underneath, often supported by graft, needs time to heal before it can take the load of walking.
Typical stages
- First weeks: crutches or a frame, foot touching the ground lightly or not at all, swelling control and early bending, often in a hinged brace
- Up to six weeks: aim for bending past a right angle and full straightening, with quadriceps exercises
- Around six to twelve weeks: if X-rays show healing, weight is increased in steps until you walk without crutches
- Three to six months: normal walking, stairs, cycling and strengthening; return to most office and lighter work
- Six to twelve months: heavier work, running and sport in suitable patients, with some people continuing to improve beyond a year
Practical life during recovery in Qatar
Living with crutches is easier in a home with a ground-floor bedroom, or with a lift. A shower chair, rails and removing loose rugs from smooth floors help prevent falls. Many patients pray seated on a chair during this period. Driving usually waits until you can walk without crutches and brake firmly, and those with physically demanding or industrial jobs should plan for a longer absence, ideally agreeing a phased return with their employer.
If you plan to travel home on a long flight, ask about blood clot prevention first.
Follow-up at Aman Hospital
Dr. Gelber reviews X-rays at intervals to judge when weight can be increased, checks bending and strength, and works with your physiotherapist on each stage. Contact the team in Doha promptly if pain or swelling suddenly increases, the wound becomes red or leaks, or your calf becomes painful and swollen.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my knee still swollen months later?
Swelling after a plateau fracture often lingers for months, especially after activity. Elevation, compression and steady exercise help; marked or increasing swelling should be checked.
Will I limp permanently?
Most people regain a normal or near-normal walking pattern with rehabilitation, though it can take several months for the limp to resolve as strength returns.
