Patient question

Can I fly home with a torn ACL before deciding on treatment?

Dr. Pablo GelberOrthopaedic Knee Surgeon

Quick answer

Usually yes. A torn ACL does not stop you flying, but a freshly injured, swollen knee raises the risk of blood clots on long flights and is uncomfortable in a cramped seat. Get the knee assessed in Doha first so you travel with a diagnosis and a plan, advises Dr. Pablo Gelber at Aman Hospital.

Why the first weeks need planning

After a knee injury you move less, the leg is swollen, and you may be on crutches. A long flight adds hours of sitting still. Together these raise the risk of a deep vein thrombosis, a clot in the calf veins.

The risk is higher if you have had a clot before, take hormonal medication, are pregnant, are overweight or have other medical conditions. Some people are advised to take a blood-thinning injection or tablet for travel; that is an individual decision for a doctor who knows your history.

Practical tips for a long flight

  • Ask the airline for an aisle seat, or extra legroom if available
  • Request wheelchair or assistance at Hamad International Airport if walking long distances is hard
  • Wear a below-knee compression stocking if advised
  • Drink water, limit alcohol and avoid sleeping for hours in one position
  • Pump your ankles every half hour and walk in the aisle when safe
  • Carry your MRI images and reports in your hand luggage

Treated in Qatar or at home?

Many expats in Qatar ask whether to have treatment in Doha or in their home country. The main questions are practical: where you will be for the next nine to twelve months of rehabilitation, where your insurance cover applies, and whether you can attend regular physiotherapy and follow-up.

Splitting care is possible, for example having surgery in Doha and continuing physiotherapy elsewhere, but it works most smoothly when one team holds the overall plan.

Getting a plan before you travel

An assessment at Aman Hospital before a summer trip means you leave knowing whether the ACL is torn, whether other structures are injured, and which exercises to keep doing. Dr. Gelber can give you a written summary to share with a physiotherapist or surgeon abroad if needed.

Seek urgent care, at home or abroad, for a painful swollen calf, chest pain or shortness of breath.

Frequently asked questions

Will the cabin pressure make my knee swell more?

Sitting still for hours is the main reason knees swell on flights. Raising the leg when possible, moving the ankle and walking in the aisle all help.

Can I play sport while on holiday if the knee feels fine?

Avoid football, padel, skiing and other pivoting sports until the knee has been assessed and strengthened. A holiday giving-way episode can injure the meniscus.
