Patient question
How soon should I see a doctor after an ACL injury? Is it an emergency?
Quick answer
Most ACL tears are not emergencies, and a specialist review within one to two weeks is usually right. Go the same day if the knee is locked, you cannot bear weight, the leg is numb or cold, or a fracture or dislocation is likely, advises Dr. Pablo Gelber, knee surgeon at Aman Hospital in Doha.
Red flags that need same-day care
- You cannot put any weight on the leg at all
- The knee is stuck bent and will not straighten
- The knee or kneecap looks out of place
- The foot is numb, pale, cold or you cannot move the ankle
- Severe pain that is getting worse despite rest and painkillers
- A wound over the knee, fever, or a hot red knee
- A painful, swollen calf or shortness of breath in the days after the injury
These may mean a fracture, dislocation, nerve or blood vessel injury, infection or a clot, and need urgent assessment at an emergency department.
Why one to two weeks is a sensible window
For a typical twisting injury with a pop and swelling, there is no benefit in operating in the first days. But an early specialist review still matters. It confirms the diagnosis, finds a locked meniscus or other injuries that do need quicker treatment, and starts the right rehabilitation so the knee does not stiffen.
Waiting many weeks without a plan often means more giving-way episodes and a weaker leg.
What to do until your appointment
Rest from sport, use ice and elevation, walk with crutches if needed, and keep the knee moving gently. Write down how the injury happened, whether you heard a pop and how quickly it swelled. These details help the diagnosis as much as a scan.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a referral to see a knee surgeon in Doha?
That depends on your insurance plan. Some policies require a referral or pre-approval, so check with your insurer and with Aman Hospital when booking.
Is it too late if my injury was months ago?
No. Many people are first assessed months or years after an ACL tear. The examination and MRI still guide a clear plan.
