Patient question
When can I fly home after a high tibial osteotomy?
Quick answer
Many patients wait at least two to six weeks before a long flight after a high tibial osteotomy, once the wound has healed, pain is controlled and early follow-up X-rays look satisfactory. Blood clot prevention is especially important, so flight timing is agreed individually, advises Dr. Pablo Gelber, knee surgeon at Aman Hospital, Doha.
Why the first weeks matter
After an osteotomy you are usually on crutches with limited weight on the leg, the leg can swell, and the risk of blood clots is higher than normal. The first weeks also include wound checks, removal of stitches or clips, and an early X-ray to confirm the bone and plate are in a good position. Staying in Doha until these steps are done makes problems easier to spot and treat.
Planning surgery around travel
Many residents of Qatar plan knee surgery around the long summer break or a fixed trip home. If you know you will travel, tell Dr. Gelber early. It is often wiser to have surgery after an important trip, or early enough that you have several weeks of recovery and physiotherapy in Doha before flying. Remember that physiotherapy continues for months, so arrange how you will continue it while away.
Reducing the risk on the flight
- Continue any blood-thinning medicine exactly as prescribed
- Ask whether compression stockings are advised for you
- Book an aisle seat or extra legroom so you can straighten the leg
- Request airport wheelchair or assistance, as long walks on crutches are tiring
- Move your ankles regularly and walk when it is safe to do so
- Drink plenty of water and limit alcohol
Warning signs during or after travel
Calf pain, swelling or warmth in the leg, sudden breathlessness or chest pain need urgent medical care immediately, wherever you are. Increasing redness, discharge from the wound or fever also need prompt review. Carry a copy of your operation note and medication list.
Frequently asked questions
Will the plate set off airport security?
It may. Security staff are used to this. Carrying a brief medical note or the operation report can make the process easier.
Can I fly business class sooner?
More space helps comfort, but the clot risk and need for early checks are the same, so timing is still agreed with your surgeon.
