Patient question
Will I go home the same day after knee surgery, or stay overnight?
Quick answer
Many keyhole knee operations, such as meniscus surgery and often ACL reconstruction, are done as day surgery, so you go home the same day. Knee replacement and larger open operations usually need one or more nights. Your health, pain control and support at home decide it, explains Dr. Pablo Gelber, knee surgeon at Aman Hospital in Doha.
The short verdict
Going home the same day is not a shortcut. It is planned for operations and patients where recovery at home is as safe as recovery on a ward, and many people sleep better in their own bed. An overnight or longer stay is planned when the operation is bigger, pain needs closer control, or your health needs monitoring. Either way, you only leave when you are ready.
How they compare
- Typical day cases: diagnostic arthroscopy, meniscus trimming or repair, loose body removal and, in many patients, ACL reconstruction
- Typical overnight or longer: knee replacement, osteotomy, fracture fixation, multi-ligament surgery and revision operations
- Before going home: you need to be awake, eating and drinking, passing urine, with pain controlled by tablets, and safe on crutches
- At home: you need a responsible adult with you for the first night and a way to get home without driving
- Ward stay: gives closer nursing, physiotherapy and pain management, especially in the first day after a larger operation
- Planned change: a day case can become an overnight stay if pain, sickness or slow recovery from anaesthesia need it
Who each option tends to suit
Day surgery tends to suit generally healthy people having keyhole surgery, who live with someone and have easy access home, including stairs they can manage. An overnight stay tends to suit people having a replacement or open surgery, older patients, those with diabetes, heart or lung conditions or sleep apnoea, people who live alone, and those whose accommodation in Doha is far from the hospital or has many stairs without a lift.
When to plan it in Doha
Discuss the expected stay at your consultation so you can arrange family support, time off work and transport. Tell the team if you live alone, care for others, or plan to fly soon after surgery. Dr. Gelber and the team at Aman Hospital will give you written aftercare advice and a contact number. Call promptly if you develop fever, increasing redness, calf pain, or breathlessness at home.
Frequently asked questions
Can I go home by taxi after day surgery?
Only with a responsible adult travelling with you. You should not drive yourself home after an anaesthetic.
If I go home the same day, do I miss physiotherapy?
No. A physiotherapist usually checks your walking and exercises before discharge, and outpatient physiotherapy starts soon after.
