Patient question

Can you prevent a meniscus tear, and what actually lowers the risk?

Dr. Pablo GelberOrthopaedic Knee Surgeon

Quick answer

Not every meniscus tear can be prevented, but the risk can be lowered. Strong thigh and hip muscles, good landing and cutting technique, avoiding deep loaded squats with a twist, and keeping a healthy weight all reduce strain on the meniscus, according to Dr. Pablo Gelber, knee surgeon at Aman Hospital in Doha.

How the meniscus usually tears

In younger people, most tears happen when the foot is planted and the body twists over a bent knee, as in football, padel or basketball. In people over about 40, the meniscus becomes less elastic, and an ordinary movement such as getting up from a deep squat can be enough. Prevention therefore looks a little different depending on your age.

What lowers the risk in sport

  • Strengthening the quadriceps, hamstrings and hip muscles, which control how the knee moves under load
  • Practising landing with the knee over the toes, not collapsing inwards
  • A proper warm-up before football or padel, especially in the evening after a day of sitting
  • Footwear that suits the surface, since very grippy studs on artificial turf hold the foot while the body turns
  • Building training load gradually after a break, including after Ramadan or the summer

Structured warm-up programmes used in football, which combine strength, balance and landing drills, are designed to reduce knee ligament injuries, and the same control protects the meniscus.

What lowers the risk in everyday life

For older adults, the main strain comes from deep bending combined with twisting. Turning to stand up from a low position while the knee is fully bent loads the back of the meniscus. Rising straight up, using a hand for support, and keeping thigh muscles strong all help. Every kilogram of body weight adds load across the knee with each step, so gradual weight loss is one of the most useful long-term measures.

If you have already had a tear

A knee with a previous tear, or one that has had part of the meniscus removed, deserves extra care. A physiotherapy programme focused on strength and control is the usual foundation. If the knee keeps catching or swelling, Dr. Gelber can examine it at Aman Hospital and advise whether anything more is needed.

Frequently asked questions

Does a knee brace prevent meniscus tears?

There is little evidence that a brace prevents a first meniscus tear in a healthy knee. Muscle strength and movement control matter more. Braces have specific roles after some injuries and operations.

Are supplements useful for protecting the meniscus?

No supplement has been shown to prevent meniscus tears. A balanced diet, adequate protein for muscle and a healthy weight are more useful.
