Patient question

Can I kneel and pray normally with a PCL tear?

Dr. Pablo GelberOrthopaedic Knee Surgeon

Quick answer

In the first weeks after a PCL tear, kneeling and deep bending, as in sujood or sitting on the floor, can stress the healing ligament and are usually worth limiting. Praying on a chair for a period is a common temporary adjustment, explains Dr. Pablo Gelber, knee surgeon at Aman Hospital in Doha, Qatar.

Why kneeling matters for the PCL

When you kneel, your weight presses on the front of the upper shin, which pushes the tibia backwards. That is exactly the movement the PCL resists. Deep bending also increases the tendency of the shin to sag backwards. During healing, repeated kneeling and deep flexion can stretch the ligament and cause aching at the back or front of the knee.

Adapting prayer during healing

  • Many patients pray seated on a chair or stool while the knee is protected
  • If you kneel, use a thick, soft mat and lower yourself using the healthy leg and your hands
  • Avoid sitting back on your heels or cross-legged on the floor until bending is comfortable
  • Wear the PCL brace if one has been prescribed, unless Dr. Gelber or your physiotherapist advises otherwise
  • For religious questions about how to pray during an illness, a local scholar can advise

Other daily activities

Desk work, driving an automatic car with the uninjured right leg, and walking on level ground are usually possible early on. Stairs may be easier using the handrail, leading with the stronger leg when going down. Low floor seating, majlis-style cushions and squatting are wise to avoid at first. Your physiotherapist will reintroduce deeper bending in stages.

When kneeling usually returns

With lower-grade tears, many people kneel comfortably again within a few months as strength returns. After complete tears or surgery it often takes longer, and some people find prolonged kneeling on hard floors uncomfortable for a long time. If kneeling remains painful despite rehabilitation, an assessment can look for cartilage or kneecap problems that may need separate treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Will praying on a chair weaken my knee?

No. Rehabilitation exercises build strength. Praying on a chair simply avoids a heavy load on the ligament while it heals.

Is it safe to kneel if it does not hurt?

Pain is a useful guide but not the only one. In the first weeks, follow the bending limits your surgeon or physiotherapist gives you, even if kneeling feels manageable.
