Patient question

When can I walk without crutches after ACL reconstruction?

Dr. Pablo GelberOrthopaedic Knee Surgeon

Quick answer

After ACL reconstruction alone, many people put full weight on the leg early and stop using crutches within about two to four weeks, once they walk without a limp. A meniscus repair often means a longer, protected period, explains Dr. Pablo Gelber, knee surgeon at Aman Hospital in Doha.

The milestones that matter

Dropping crutches is earned by function rather than by the calendar. Physiotherapists usually look for:

  • A knee that straightens fully, or nearly fully
  • Good control of the quadriceps, such as a straight-leg raise without the knee sagging
  • Swelling that is settling, not increasing with walking
  • A walking pattern without a limp

Many people go from two crutches to one, then to none, over a few days.

Why it may take longer

  • Meniscus repair: weight bearing or bending may be limited for several weeks to protect the stitches
  • Cartilage treatment: some procedures need a period of partial weight bearing
  • Persistent swelling or a knee that will not straighten
  • Pain from the graft site or general fatigue

Your discharge plan from Aman Hospital states which rules apply to you, and these should be followed even if the knee feels good.

Walking well, not just walking

Coming off crutches too early with a limp can irritate the knee and slow the return of a normal walking pattern. Focus on heel-to-toe walking, short steps and full straightening at each stride. Walking indoors on flat floors is a sensible start; in the summer, air-conditioned malls offer cool, level space to build distance.

When to call

Contact the team if you develop calf pain or swelling, increasing redness or discharge from the wounds, fever, or a sudden loss of the movement you had gained. Dr. Gelber reviews walking and range of motion at the early follow-up visits in Doha.

Frequently asked questions

Will I need a brace when I stop using crutches?

Not always. A brace is used after some combined procedures, such as meniscus repair, and the surgeon will tell you when it can be removed.

Is it normal to limp for a while?

A slight limp in the first weeks is common. If it persists beyond about six weeks, ask your physiotherapist to check extension and strength.
