Patient question
Should I rest or keep moving with knee pain?
Quick answer
For most knee pain without a major injury, relative rest works better than complete rest: keep moving within comfort, cut back the activity that provokes it, and build strength gradually. Stop and seek care if the knee swells, locks, gives way or you cannot bear weight, says Dr. Pablo Gelber, knee surgeon at Aman Hospital in Doha.
Why complete rest is rarely the answer
Joint cartilage is nourished by movement, and the thigh muscles that protect the knee weaken quickly when you stop using them. A week or two on the sofa often leaves the knee stiffer and weaker, and the pain returns as soon as you start again.
Short rest does have a place: for a day or two after a fresh strain, or during a hot, swollen flare. After that, the aim is to load the knee at a level it tolerates.
A simple pain rule
Many physiotherapists use a traffic-light approach. Mild discomfort during exercise, up to about 3 or 4 out of 10, that settles within 24 hours is usually acceptable. Pain that climbs higher, or a knee that is more painful or swollen the next morning, means you did too much and should scale back.
This lets you keep exercising while the knee recovers rather than waiting for the pain to vanish completely.
What relative rest looks like
- Swap the painful activity for a gentler one: cycling or swimming instead of running or padel for a few weeks
- Shorten sessions and add rest days rather than stopping everything
- Avoid deep squats, kneeling and long stair climbs while it is sore
- Do thigh and hip strengthening most days
- In Qatar's summer, choose air-conditioned gyms or early mornings so heat does not cut sessions short and tempt you to cram them
When to stop and see a knee specialist
Stop and get examined if the knee swelled quickly after an injury, locks or catches, gives way, or you cannot put weight on it. Also book if pain is not improving after four to six weeks of sensible relative rest.
At Aman Hospital in Doha, Dr. Gelber can confirm what is causing the pain and work with physiotherapists on a loading plan suited to your knee and your sport.
Frequently asked questions
Should I wear a knee brace while I rest it?
A simple sleeve can feel comforting, but a brace is not a substitute for strengthening. Rigid braces are mainly for specific injuries such as ligament tears and should be used on medical advice.
Is it bad to keep playing football with knee pain?
Playing through mild, stable ache is sometimes acceptable, but pain with twisting, swelling after games or a feeling of instability suggests an injury that needs assessment before you play on.
