Patient question
Should I get a second opinion before going back to sport after a knee injury?
Quick answer
A second opinion before returning to sport is worth considering if you have been cleared but the knee still feels unstable, swollen or weak, or if you were told you can never play again. Objective strength and movement testing helps settle the question, explains Doha knee surgeon Dr. Pablo Gelber at Aman Hospital.
When it is worth asking
- You have been cleared to play, but the knee still swells after training or feels like it might give way
- You were told to stop your sport altogether and want to understand all the options
- You are approaching a key season or academy trial and want an independent view
- You have had more than one injury to the same knee
- The timeline you were given feels much shorter or longer than you expected
Why time alone is not enough
After ACL reconstruction and other major knee injuries, the risk of reinjury is linked to returning before strength, control and confidence have recovered, not only to the number of months since surgery. Many players in Qatar return to football, padel or basketball quickly because of team pressure or seasonal schedules, which can raise that risk.
What a return-to-sport review involves
Dr. Gelber examines stability, swelling and range of motion, and reviews your surgery and rehabilitation. Often this is combined with physiotherapy testing, such as strength comparisons between legs, hop tests and movement quality during landing and cutting. Psychological readiness matters too, because fear of reinjury changes how you move. The aim is a clear, shared decision about whether you are ready, and what is still missing if not.
If the answer is not yet
That usually means a defined rehabilitation target rather than an open-ended wait. Working with your physiotherapist on the specific gaps, and training at cooler hours or indoors during the summer heat, helps you get there safely.
Frequently asked questions
My club physio cleared me. Is a second opinion disrespectful?
Not at all. Many athletes seek a surgeon's review at key decision points, and good teams welcome shared information.
Can I return to sport without surgery after an ACL tear?
Some people can, especially in sports without heavy pivoting, but for football, padel and basketball reconstruction is usually advised. This depends on examination and your goals.
