My first ACL surgery was done abroad. Can I have the revision in Qatar?

A common situation in Qatar

Many people living in Qatar had their first ACL reconstruction in their home country or during a previous posting, then moved here and later noticed the knee becoming unstable. Others had surgery abroad while visiting family. The revision does not need to be done where the first operation took place.

What to gather before your consultation

• The operation note, which states the graft used, the tunnel technique and the fixation devices
• Any MRI or CT scans on disc or via an online link, not only the written reports
• X-rays taken after surgery, which show where screws or buttons sit
• Physiotherapy reports and the date you returned to sport
• A note of any later injuries or episodes of giving way

If documents are in another language, bring them anyway. A translation can be arranged if needed, and many implants can be recognised on X-ray or CT.

If records are missing

It is still possible to plan a revision without the original notes. A CT scan shows the tunnels and implants in detail, and the examination and MRI show the state of the graft and other structures. Occasionally, unknown implants mean extra instruments are prepared or a two-stage approach is chosen to be safe.
