Patient question

My knee clicks every time I walk. Is something wrong?

Quick answer

A knee that clicks with each step but does not hurt, swell or catch usually has a harmless cause, such as a tendon sliding over bone or the kneecap gliding unevenly. A click that comes with pain on one side of the joint deserves an examination, says Dr. Pablo Gelber, knee surgeon at Aman Hospital in Doha.

Why walking can make a knee click

Walking bends and straightens the knee thousands of times a day, so any small catch in how the tissues glide becomes noticeable. A regular click with each step usually comes from a tendon or band of tissue flicking over a bony edge, or from the kneecap riding slightly off-centre in its groove.

If the noise happens at the same point in every step, is painless and the knee feels strong, it is very rarely a sign of damage. Many people notice it more on hard floors, in new shoes, or after a long day on their feet.

When the click points to something else

  • A click with a sharp pain on the inner or outer joint line, especially when turning, can be a meniscus tear
  • A click with an ache behind the kneecap on slopes and stairs often comes from patellofemoral pain
  • A click on the inner front of the knee with an ache after sitting may be an irritated plica
  • A click that started after a fall or twist, with swelling the next day, needs assessment
  • A click with the knee briefly getting stuck suggests a loose fragment or a torn flap of cartilage

What you can try at home

For painless clicking, keep walking. Strengthening the thigh and hip muscles with simple exercises such as straight leg raises, mini squats, step-ups and side-lying leg lifts often improves how the kneecap tracks and makes the knee quieter. Supportive, cushioned shoes help on hard floors and malls.

If the click hurts, shorten your walks for a week or two, avoid steep slopes and stairs where you can, and use ice after activity. In the Qatar summer, walking on an indoor track or in the cooler early morning makes it easier to keep moving while the knee settles.

When to see a knee surgeon in Doha

Book an assessment if the clicking hurts, if the knee swells, catches or gives way, or if the noise began after an injury. Seek same-day care if the knee locks and will not straighten. At Aman Hospital, Dr. Gelber feels for where the click comes from as you bend and walk, checks the meniscus, ligaments and kneecap, and orders a scan only when the examination suggests a mechanical problem.

Frequently asked questions

Will walking more make a clicking knee worse?

Not if it is painless. Regular walking keeps cartilage healthy and muscles strong. If walking causes pain or swelling, reduce the distance and have the knee checked rather than stopping completely.

Should I wear a knee support?

A simple sleeve can feel reassuring but does not fix the cause. It is reasonable for comfort on long walks, while strengthening exercises do the real work.

My knee only clicks in the morning. Is that different?

Clicks that fade after the first few minutes of walking are usually from the joint loosening up. Morning stiffness that lasts longer, with aching, can point to arthritis and is worth a review.
