Patient question
Can I still kneel for prayer and sit on the floor with cartilage damage in my knee?
Quick answer
Many people with cartilage damage can keep kneeling and sitting on the floor, but deep bending loads the back of the kneecap and the rear of the thigh bone, so it may aggravate some defects. Small adjustments usually help, and praying on a chair is a valid option, says Dr. Pablo Gelber, knee surgeon in Doha, Qatar.
Why deep bending can hurt
In sujood, the tashahhud position and cross-legged floor sitting, the knee bends fully under body weight. In that position the kneecap presses hard into its groove, and the back part of the thigh bone rests on the meniscus and shin bone. If your defect sits behind the kneecap or on the back of the femoral condyle, these positions may provoke an ache or swelling. Defects in other areas may cause little trouble when kneeling.
Practical ways to reduce the load
- Use a thicker prayer mat or a soft cushion under the knees
- Lower yourself slowly using your hands or a nearby support rather than dropping onto the knees
- Shift weight towards the less painful leg when rising
- Avoid sitting on your heels for long periods outside prayer
- Strengthen the thigh and hip muscles, which makes getting down and up easier
- On bad days, many patients pray seated on a chair; the ruling can be discussed with a scholar
Work and home life
Majlis seating, playing on the floor with children and jobs that involve kneeling or squatting add up across the day. Spreading these tasks out, using a low stool or knee pads at work, and sitting on a chair for long gatherings can make a noticeable difference.
When to have it assessed
See a knee surgeon if kneeling regularly causes swelling, the knee catches or locks when you stand up, or you can no longer bend it as far as before. At Aman Hospital in Doha, Dr. Gelber asks about the positions you need for prayer and work, so the treatment plan fits your daily routine.
Frequently asked questions
Will kneeling make my cartilage damage worse?
Occasional kneeling is unlikely to cause major harm in most knees, but repeated deep bending that brings on swelling is a sign the joint is overloaded and the habit may need adjusting.
Can I kneel after cartilage surgery?
Deep kneeling is usually avoided for several months after cartilage restoration, especially for repairs behind the kneecap. Your surgeon will tell you when it is safe.
