Patient question

Is my knee brace making my muscles weaker?

Dr. Pablo GelberOrthopaedic Knee Surgeon

Quick answer

A brace does not switch your muscles off by itself, but relying on it while moving less can let the thigh muscles weaken. Used for a clear reason, alongside strengthening, a support is unlikely to cause harm, explains Dr. Pablo Gelber, knee surgeon at Aman Hospital in Doha.

Where the worry comes from

Many people notice that the knee feels weaker or less stable when they take a brace off after weeks of wearing it. That feeling is real, but the cause is usually reduced activity, pain inhibiting the muscles or the original injury, rather than the brace itself.

Rigid braces that lock the knee for long periods are different: keeping a joint still does lead to muscle loss, which is why they are used only for set periods after surgery.

Signs you may be over-relying on a support

  • You wear it for every activity, including sitting and sleeping, without medical advice
  • You feel anxious walking without it even on flat ground
  • Your thigh looks smaller than the other side
  • You have stopped exercising and use the brace instead

How to wean off safely

Start a strengthening programme first, focusing on the quadriceps, hamstrings, hips and balance. Then remove the brace for low-risk activities, such as walking at home, and keep it for longer walks or sport for a while. Over several weeks most people find they need it less. A physiotherapist can set exercises that fit your knee and goals.

When to have the knee checked

If the knee truly gives way, locks, swells or remains painful despite regular exercise, there may be an underlying problem such as a ligament or meniscus tear. At Aman Hospital, Dr. Gelber examines the knee and advises whether the support is still needed and what else might help.

Frequently asked questions

Is it fine to keep using a sleeve for sport?

Yes, if it feels helpful and you are also doing regular strength work. The concern is using a brace in place of exercise, not alongside it.

My surgeon told me to wear a hinged brace. Should I stop early?

No. Follow the timeline you were given, as post-operative braces protect repairs. Ask at your next review if you are unsure.
