Patient question
Does insurance cover a knee second opinion in Qatar?
Quick answer
It depends on your policy. Many health insurance plans in Qatar cover a specialist consultation, which can include a second opinion, but rules on networks, referrals, co-payments and repeat imaging vary. Check with your insurer and Aman Hospital before booking, advises Doha knee surgeon Dr. Pablo Gelber, who sees second-opinion patients at Aman Hospital.
What to ask your insurer
- Is Aman Hospital in my network, and is an orthopaedic consultation covered?
- Do I need a referral or prior approval to see a specialist?
- Is there a limit on how many specialist visits I can have for the same problem?
- What co-payment or deductible applies?
- If new X-rays or an MRI are needed, do they need separate approval?
Having these answers in advance avoids surprises on the day.
Factors that affect the overall cost
A second opinion is usually a consultation, so the main factors are the consultation itself and any additional tests. Bringing your existing MRI and X-ray images often avoids repeating them. If new standing X-rays are needed to assess alignment or arthritis, or if your scan cannot be opened or is incomplete, those add to the cost.
Prices are not published on this site because they depend on what is needed and on your coverage. Aman Hospital can tell you the consultation fee and give an estimate for any tests.
If surgery is recommended
If Dr. Gelber recommends surgery and you choose to have it at Aman Hospital, the hospital usually submits a new pre-authorisation request to your insurer with his report and the imaging. Approval for one hospital does not automatically transfer to another, so allow time for this step. Make sure the request covers the exact procedure, as approvals are often specific.
Visitors and self-pay
Patients without local cover, or visiting from elsewhere in the GCC, can usually self-pay for a consultation. Ask Aman Hospital in advance what the visit includes, and check whether your home insurer reimburses care abroad.
Frequently asked questions
Will my insurer refuse surgery because I got a second opinion?
Getting a second opinion does not usually affect approval. Insurers assess whether the procedure is medically necessary, based on the documentation provided.
Does Aman Hospital accept my insurance?
Network agreements change, so ask Aman Hospital and your insurer directly before your visit. This site does not list accepted insurers.
