Patient question

I live elsewhere in the GCC. How do I get a knee second opinion in Doha?

Dr. Pablo GelberOrthopaedic Knee Surgeon

Quick answer

Patients from other GCC countries can book an in-person consultation at Aman Hospital in Doha, bringing their MRI images, X-rays and reports. Allowing two or three days in Qatar usually leaves time for the visit, any extra imaging and a follow-up discussion, explains Doha knee surgeon Dr. Pablo Gelber, who sees all patients at Aman Hospital.

Planning the trip

Doha is a short flight or drive from much of the region, and many families combine a medical visit with a stay in the city. To make the trip worthwhile:

  • Book the appointment before you travel and mention that you are coming from abroad, so the timing can fit your flights
  • Allow at least two to three days, in case new X-rays or a scan are needed and to discuss the results in person
  • Check current entry requirements for your nationality and residency with the official authorities before travelling
  • Bring an adult companion if your knee makes travel difficult, and request airport assistance if you use crutches

What to bring from home

  • Your MRI images on disc or as a download link, plus the written report
  • Any X-rays, and previous operation notes if you have had knee surgery before
  • A list of medicines, allergies and other medical conditions
  • Details of treatments already tried, such as physiotherapy or injections
  • Your passport or ID, and details of any insurance that may cover care in Qatar

Reports in Arabic or English are both helpful. Dr. Gelber reviews the images himself during the consultation.

If surgery is recommended

If Dr. Gelber recommends an operation, he will explain the options for where and when it could be done, including at Aman Hospital in Doha. For patients who choose surgery in Qatar, planning usually covers the stay needed before flying home, which depends on the procedure and blood clot risk, and how follow-up and physiotherapy will continue once you return. You can also take his opinion back to your own doctor at home.

Insurance and payment

Some GCC and international insurance policies cover care in Qatar and others do not, and pre-approval is often required. Check with your insurer and with Aman Hospital before travelling, so there are no surprises.

Frequently asked questions

Can I send my MRI before travelling to see if the trip is worth it?

The opinion itself is given at an in-person consultation in Doha, where the knee is examined. Contact the clinic before booking if you have questions about what to bring.

How soon can I fly home after a consultation?

Right away, if only a consultation took place. After surgery, the safe time to fly depends on the operation and your risk factors, and is planned in advance.
