Patient question

How long does a bone bruise in the knee take to heal?

Dr. Pablo GelberOrthopaedic Knee Surgeon

Quick answer

Most knee bone bruises become comfortable for daily activities within about six to twelve weeks, while return to impact sport often takes two to four months. Larger bruises can take longer, and MRI changes may persist after symptoms settle, explains Doha knee surgeon Dr. Pablo Gelber, who treats these injuries at Aman Hospital.

A typical recovery path

  • First one to two weeks: pain on weight-bearing, often with swelling; crutches may be used and walking is limited to what is comfortable
  • Weeks two to six: walking normally becomes easier; gentle cycling, pool work and strengthening begin
  • Weeks six to twelve: daily activities are usually comfortable; impact is gradually reintroduced if there is no pain
  • Beyond three months: return to running, jumping and pivoting sport for many, guided by symptoms rather than the calendar

What affects how long it takes

The size and depth of the bruise matter, as does whether there is an associated ligament, meniscus or cartilage injury. Returning to running too early commonly prolongs pain. Smoking, low vitamin D and poor nutrition can slow bone healing, while steady, well-judged loading supports it.

Older adults and people with thinner bones may need longer. Some bruises that appear without a clear injury are actually stress reactions or early bone weakness and are managed differently.

Can I walk on it?

Usually yes, as pain allows. Most people do not need strict non-weight-bearing. If walking causes a limp or significant pain, crutches for a period help the bone recover while keeping you mobile. Avoid long periods of standing, running, jumping and deep kneeling at first. In Qatar, a pool or a stationary bike in an air-conditioned gym is a practical way to keep fit without loading the bone.

When to be re-checked in Doha

Arrange a review if pain is not improving after six to eight weeks, if it is worse at night, if the knee locks or gives way, or if swelling returns. At Aman Hospital Dr. Gelber re-examines the knee, checks for injuries that may have been missed, and decides whether repeat imaging is useful.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need another MRI to check that it has healed?

Usually not. Recovery is judged by symptoms and function. Repeat MRI is reserved for pain that does not settle as expected.

Does a knee brace help a bone bruise?

A brace is not usually needed for a bone bruise alone, but may be used if there is an associated ligament injury.
