Patient question

When can I fly home after a knee replacement in Doha?

Dr. Pablo GelberOrthopaedic Knee Surgeon

Quick answer

Many surgeons advise waiting about six weeks before a long-haul flight after knee replacement, because the risk of blood clots is highest early on, though shorter flights may be possible sooner. The timing depends on your recovery and clot risk, explains Dr. Pablo Gelber, knee surgeon at Aman Hospital in Doha, Qatar.

Why flying matters after knee replacement

After surgery on the leg, the blood is more prone to clotting for several weeks. Long periods sitting still in a cramped seat, dehydration from dry cabin air and the knee being held bent all add to that risk. A deep vein thrombosis can travel to the lungs, which is why the timing of a long flight, such as to South Asia, Europe or North America, deserves careful planning.

Planning surgery and travel for expats

Many expatriates in Qatar would like to recover at home with family, or have family fly in to help. It is usually better to plan the first weeks of recovery in Doha, where your surgeon and physiotherapist can follow the wound, the swelling and your progress. If you plan to travel, discuss it before surgery: the length of blood-thinning treatment, follow-up appointments and a physiotherapy plan can be arranged around your dates. Check your travel insurance, as some policies have conditions after recent surgery.

On the day of the flight

  • Take any blood-thinning medicine exactly as prescribed
  • Book an aisle seat, ideally on the side that lets the operated leg stretch out, or consider extra legroom
  • Wear compression stockings if your surgeon advises
  • Walk the aisle every hour or so and do ankle pumps and knee bends in your seat
  • Drink water regularly and limit alcohol and caffeine
  • Request airport wheelchair assistance for long walks between gates; Hamad International Airport is large
  • Carry a note of your surgery and medicines; the implant may set off the metal detector

Do not fly if you have these signs

Do not travel, and seek medical care, if you have calf pain or swelling, breathlessness or chest pain, a fever, or a wound that is red or leaking. At Aman Hospital, Dr. Gelber reviews your knee before you travel and can give a summary of your operation and medicines for any doctor you see abroad.

Frequently asked questions

Can I perform Umrah after a knee replacement?

Many people do, usually after several months, once walking long distances is comfortable. Wheelchair services for tawaf and sa'i are available if needed. Discuss the timing at follow-up.

Is a short flight within the Gulf safer?

Shorter flights carry less clot risk and may be possible earlier, but the same precautions apply. Ask your surgeon before booking.
