Patient question
Can I fly home soon after knee arthroscopy?
Quick answer
Many patients can take a short flight a few days after a simple knee arthroscopy, but long-haul flights are usually delayed for at least about two weeks because of blood clot risk. The right timing depends on the procedure and your health, explains Doha knee surgeon Dr. Pablo Gelber at Aman Hospital.
Why flying matters after knee surgery
Any leg operation slightly raises the risk of a deep vein thrombosis, a clot in the deep veins of the calf or thigh. Long periods of sitting still in a cramped seat, with mild dehydration from cabin air, raise it further. Most clots after arthroscopy are small and many cause no symptoms, but a clot that travels to the lungs is serious.
For many expatriates in Qatar, surgery is planned around annual leave, a summer trip home or Eid. That is reasonable, but it is safer to book surgery so that you have time to recover in Doha and attend your first wound check before a long journey.
Typical timing
- Short regional flights of one to three hours after a simple arthroscopy: often possible after a few days, once you walk comfortably
- Long-haul flights after a simple arthroscopy: usually after about two weeks
- After meniscus repair, ligament reconstruction or other procedures that restrict walking: often four to six weeks or longer
These are typical ranges, not rules. A previous clot, a clotting disorder, hormone treatment, pregnancy, obesity, cancer or recent other surgery increases risk, and Dr. Gelber may then recommend a longer wait or preventive blood-thinning injections.
Reducing the risk on the flight
- Choose an aisle seat or extra legroom so you can stretch the leg
- Walk the aisle every hour or so when it is safe, and pump the ankles while seated
- Drink water regularly and limit alcohol and sedating sleeping tablets
- Wear graduated compression stockings if advised
- Take crutches if you still need them and request airport assistance when booking
Carry a short letter or report describing the surgery, and your discharge summary, in case you need care abroad.
Warning signs during or after travel
Seek medical help urgently for calf pain, swelling or warmth in one leg, or for sudden breathlessness, chest pain or coughing blood. These can occur up to several weeks after surgery, including after you have arrived.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a fit-to-fly letter?
Airlines do not usually require one after a simple arthroscopy, but some ask for it if you travel with a brace or crutches or need assistance. The team at Aman Hospital can provide a medical summary.
Can I have surgery in Doha and do my physiotherapy at home?
Often yes, once the early stage is over. Take your operation notes and exercise plan so your home physiotherapist can continue the programme, and keep in touch for follow-up questions.
