Patient question
When can I fly home after ACL reconstruction?
Quick answer
Short flights are often possible within a couple of weeks of ACL reconstruction, but many surgeons advise waiting around four to six weeks before long-haul travel, because of blood clot risk and the need for early physiotherapy. Plan the trip with your surgical team, advises Dr. Pablo Gelber, who performs ACL reconstruction at Aman Hospital in Doha.
Why early long flights need caution
After knee surgery the leg is swollen, you move less and the blood is more likely to clot. A long flight adds hours of sitting with the knee bent in a narrow seat. Together these raise the risk of a deep vein thrombosis, which can travel to the lungs.
The first weeks are also when rehabilitation matters most. Missing physiotherapy while away can leave the knee stiff and weak, which is harder to fix later.
If you need to fly
- Tell Dr. Gelber your travel plans before surgery so medication and follow-up can be planned
- Blood-thinning medication may be advised for the journey, depending on your risk
- Book an aisle or extra-legroom seat, ideally on the side that lets the operated leg stretch out
- Arrange wheelchair assistance at Hamad International Airport and at arrival
- Wear compression stockings if advised, pump your ankles and walk in the aisle regularly
- Drink water and avoid alcohol and sleeping tablets on the flight
Continuing rehabilitation abroad
Many expats in Qatar fly home in the summer. If you will be away for weeks, take a written summary of the operation and your rehabilitation plan so a local physiotherapist can continue it. Agree in advance which milestones need checking before you progress to running or sport.
Warning signs while travelling
Seek urgent medical care, at the airport or at your destination, for calf pain or swelling, chest pain, sudden breathlessness, coughing blood, or fever with a red, hot wound. Do not wait to return to Doha.
Frequently asked questions
Will airport security detect the screws in my knee?
Many ACL fixation devices are not metal or are too small to trigger alarms. If you are concerned, carry your operation summary.
Can I travel by car to a neighbouring country instead?
Long car journeys carry similar risks. Stop every hour or so to walk, and follow the same clot-prevention advice.
