Patient question
Why do I get a dull ache inside my knee after standing all day at work?
Quick answer
A dull ache on the inside of the knee that builds through a long shift on your feet, then eases overnight, is commonly an early sign of inner-knee osteoarthritis or a degenerative medial meniscus, made worse by hard floors, heavy loads and squatting, explains Doha knee surgeon Dr. Pablo Gelber at Aman Hospital.
Why long shifts bring it out
Standing and walking for many hours keeps a steady load on the inner compartment of the knee, which carries more weight than the outer side. Concrete or tiled floors, safety boots with little cushioning, carrying loads and repeated squatting or kneeling all add to it.
The ache tends to be dull and spread over the inner side, starting mid-shift and worst by evening. Many people in retail, hospitality, healthcare, construction, oil and gas, and security notice it after years of this kind of work, often without any single injury.
What may be behind it
- Early medial osteoarthritis: ache with standing, stiffness after rest, occasional swelling
- Degenerative medial meniscus tear: joint-line pain, aggravated by squatting and twisting
- Pes anserine bursitis: a tender spot below the inner joint
- Foot posture such as flat feet that tips the knee inward
- Extra body weight, which multiplies the load on the inner knee with every step
Changes at work and at home
Cushioned footwear or insoles, anti-fatigue mats at fixed workstations and the chance to sit for short breaks make a real difference. Use a trolley or ask for help with heavy loads, and kneel on a pad or use a low stool instead of deep squatting.
Outside work, a strengthening routine for the thigh and hip muscles, three times a week, is the most useful step. Gradual weight loss, if relevant, reduces the load significantly. In summer, outdoor workers should also be aware that dehydration and fatigue in the heat make muscles tire faster and the joint feel worse.
When to see a knee surgeon in Doha
Book an assessment if the ache is affecting your ability to complete shifts, persists on days off, causes swelling, or the knee catches or gives way. A sudden worsening, a hot swollen knee or pain at night and rest should be seen promptly.
At Aman Hospital, Dr. Gelber examines the knee and alignment and reviews standing X-rays to judge the state of the inner joint. If you need a written note on activity limits or modified duties, that can be discussed at the consultation.
Frequently asked questions
Will I have to change my job?
Most people do not. Workplace adjustments, strengthening and treatment of the underlying problem usually allow people to keep working, sometimes with temporary modified duties.
Does a knee support help during long shifts?
A soft sleeve can make the knee feel more comfortable for some people. For inner-knee arthritis, an unloader brace may help in selected cases after assessment.
