Patient question

Does kinesio tape actually help knee pain?

Dr. Pablo GelberOrthopaedic Knee Surgeon

Quick answer

Kinesio tape can make a sore knee feel more comfortable or supported for a few hours, and kneecap taping helps some people exercise with less pain. It does not heal tissue or fix a torn ligament, explains Dr. Pablo Gelber, knee surgeon at Aman Hospital, Doha, so treat it as a short-term aid alongside exercise.

What tape can and cannot do

Studies of kinesiology tape for knee pain show small, short-lived benefits, if any, and much of the effect may come from the reassuring feeling of something on the skin. Firmer, rigid kneecap taping applied by a physiotherapist has somewhat better support for front-of-knee pain, mainly by allowing people to do their exercises with less pain. Neither type stabilises a knee with a torn ACL or meniscus, and neither replaces strengthening.

A simple kinesio tape application

This is a common comfort taping around the kneecap. Ask a physiotherapist to show you the first time.

  • 1. Clean and dry the skin; trim hair if necessary
  • 2. Cut two strips long enough to reach from just below to just above the kneecap along each side, and round the corners
  • 3. Sit with the knee bent to about 60 to 90 degrees
  • 4. Peel the backing from one end, anchor it below the kneecap on the inner side without stretch
  • 5. Apply the middle of the strip along the edge of the kneecap with light stretch, then lay the last few centimetres down without stretch
  • 6. Repeat on the outer side, then rub the tape to warm the glue

Safety notes

  • Test a small piece first if you have sensitive skin; remove it if it itches, burns or causes blisters
  • Do not tape over broken skin, wounds or fresh surgical scars
  • In Doha's heat and humidity, sweat loosens tape quickly; remove it gently, peeling in the direction of hair growth, after a day or two
  • Never tape tightly around the whole knee, as this can restrict circulation

When tape is not the answer

If you need tape to get through every session, or the knee gives way, locks or swells despite taping, the underlying problem needs a diagnosis. A knee specialist in Doha can examine the knee and decide whether physiotherapy, a brace or other treatment is appropriate.

Frequently asked questions

Is tape better than a knee brace?

They do different jobs. Tape is light and mainly for comfort or kneecap tracking; a hinged brace gives real mechanical support for certain ligament injuries.

Can I swim or shower with kinesio tape on?

Yes, most kinesiology tape tolerates water. Pat it dry afterwards, and remove it if the skin underneath becomes irritated.
