Patient question

Can supplements or a special diet rebuild damaged knee cartilage?

Dr. Pablo GelberOrthopaedic Knee Surgeon

Quick answer

No supplement or diet has been shown to rebuild a cartilage defect. Glucosamine, chondroitin and collagen may ease symptoms slightly in some people, but they do not fill a hole in the cartilage. Be cautious of clinics promising regrowth, advises Dr. Pablo Gelber, knee surgeon at Aman Hospital in Doha.

Myth: glucosamine and collagen regrow cartilage

Glucosamine and chondroitin are components of cartilage, but swallowing them does not deliver new cartilage to the knee. Studies show mixed results for pain, and no reliable evidence that they restore a defect. Collagen supplements have a similar story. They are generally safe for most people, but they are a cost without a proven structural benefit, and anyone on blood thinners or with diabetes should check with their doctor first.

Myth: the right foods will heal it

A balanced diet supports general health and helps with weight, which genuinely reduces load on the knee. No specific food, however, repairs cartilage. The most useful dietary step for a painful knee is usually gradual weight loss if you are carrying extra weight.

Myth: an injection can grow new cartilage

Platelet-rich plasma, hyaluronic acid and so-called stem cell injections are often marketed as regenerative. Some may help pain in selected patients, but the evidence that they regrow a cartilage defect in people is limited. Products, regulation and availability also differ between countries and clinics. If an injection is described as rebuilding cartilage, ask what evidence supports that claim.

What does help

  • Strengthening the thigh and hip muscles
  • Adjusting the activities that provoke swelling
  • Managing weight
  • Treating instability, meniscus problems or alignment that overload the damaged area
  • Surgical cartilage restoration for selected defects

Dr. Gelber can review your scan in Doha and explain which of these fits your knee.

Frequently asked questions

Is it harmful to keep taking glucosamine?

For most people it is low risk. If it seems to help your symptoms, there is often no reason to stop, but it should not replace exercise or delay assessment of a locking or swelling knee.

Does vitamin D matter for my knee?

Low vitamin D is common in Qatar and matters for bone and muscle health. Correcting a deficiency is sensible, though it does not repair a cartilage defect.
