Patient question

How long is recovery after ACL repair, and is it faster than reconstruction?

Dr. Pablo GelberOrthopaedic Knee Surgeon

Quick answer

The first weeks after ACL repair are often a little easier than after reconstruction, with less pain and quicker movement. Return to pivoting sport is still usually around nine months or later and is guided by testing, explains Dr. Pablo Gelber, knee surgeon at Aman Hospital in Doha.

The usual stages

  • First two weeks: crutches, swelling control and regaining a fully straight knee
  • Weeks two to six: walking normally without crutches, bending past a right angle, starting static cycling
  • Months two to four: progressive strength work in the gym, balance and controlled single-leg exercises
  • Months four to six: running on straight lines, then agility drills if strength is on target
  • From around nine months: return to football, padel or basketball once testing is passed

Why it is not dramatically shorter

The repaired ligament still needs time to heal into bone and mature. More importantly, the muscles around the knee lose strength after any injury and operation, and that recovery takes months whatever the procedure.

Re-injury risk falls when people return later and with good strength, so the sports timeline is driven by the knee's readiness rather than the type of surgery.

Fitting rehab around life in Qatar

Early exercises can be done at home or in an air-conditioned gym. When running starts, choose an indoor track or early mornings in the summer months. Prayer positions that need deep bending, such as sujood, are usually reintroduced gradually as movement returns; a chair is a practical option while you recover, and you can discuss the religious side with a scholar.

When to call your surgeon

Contact the team for fever, wound redness or discharge, calf swelling or pain, a knee that suddenly gives way, or a knee that will not straighten after several weeks. Regular follow-up at Aman Hospital lets Dr. Gelber and your physiotherapist adjust the plan as you progress.

Frequently asked questions

Will I need a brace after ACL repair?

Some surgeons use a brace for the first weeks, especially if the meniscus was also repaired. Others do not. The plan depends on what was done during your operation.

When can I drive after ACL repair?

For a left knee in an automatic car, often within a couple of weeks once off strong painkillers. For a right knee, usually later, when you can brake hard and safely.
