Patient question
How does working with a physiotherapist in Doha fit with my knee surgeon's care?
Quick answer
Knee recovery works well as a team: the surgeon makes the diagnosis, sets the restrictions and milestones, and the physiotherapist turns them into a progressive exercise programme and reports back. You can usually do physiotherapy at a clinic convenient to you in Qatar, explains Doha knee surgeon Dr. Pablo Gelber at Aman Hospital.
Who does what
Your surgeon, or the doctor who examines your knee, decides what the problem is and whether it needs surgery. After an operation the surgeon also sets the rules that protect the repair: how much weight you can take, how far the knee may bend, whether a brace is needed and when key steps such as running are allowed.
The physiotherapist assesses movement, strength and control, teaches the exercises, progresses them as the knee improves and spots problems early, such as a knee that is not straightening or swelling that keeps returning. Good rehabilitation needs both roles talking to each other.
What a physiotherapy session usually involves
- An assessment of swelling, range of movement, strength, balance and walking
- Hands-on treatment where helpful, such as soft-tissue work or joint mobilisation
- Supervised exercises, with the load and technique checked
- A home or gym programme for the days between sessions
- Later, running, jumping and sport-specific drills, and testing before return to sport
Most of the progress comes from the exercises you do between sessions, so expect homework.
Doing rehab at a clinic near you
Patients come to Aman Hospital from across Qatar, from Al Wakrah to Al Khor, and travelling across Doha several times a week is not always practical. Many patients therefore do their sessions closer to home or work. That works well when the physiotherapist has a copy of the operation note and the rehabilitation protocol, and when you return for surgical follow-up at the planned milestones.
When choosing a clinic, look for a licensed physiotherapist with experience of knee and sports rehabilitation, access to strength equipment, and willingness to share progress notes. It is reasonable to ask how they will measure your progress.
Physio first or surgeon first?
For gradual knee pain without injury, starting with physiotherapy is often sensible. After a twisting injury with swelling, a pop, locking or giving way, see a knee specialist first, because some injuries, such as a displaced meniscus tear, are better treated early.
Frequently asked questions
Will Dr. Gelber give my physiotherapist a protocol?
Yes. After surgery you receive a written rehabilitation plan with restrictions and milestones, and your physiotherapist can contact the clinic with questions.
How do I know my physiotherapy is going well?
Swelling should gradually settle, movement should improve and strength measures should rise over weeks. If progress stalls for several weeks, discuss it with both your physiotherapist and your surgeon.
