Patient question

Is a suspected knee tendon rupture an emergency?

Dr. Pablo GelberOrthopaedic Knee Surgeon

Quick answer

A suspected complete quadriceps or patellar tendon rupture is urgent rather than life-threatening: it should be assessed within a day or two, because repair is usually more straightforward in the first couple of weeks. Go to emergency care at once if there is a wound, severe deformity or numbness, advises Doha knee surgeon Dr. Pablo Gelber.

Signs that point to a rupture

  • A pop or tearing sensation at the front of the knee during a fall, jump or stumble
  • Inability to lift the leg off the bed with the knee straight
  • The knee buckles when you try to stand or walk
  • A gap you can feel just above or below the kneecap
  • Swelling and bruising at the front of the knee
  • The kneecap sitting unusually high or low compared with the other side

Why timing matters

When a tendon ruptures, the muscle pulls the torn end away and starts to shorten. Over a few weeks, scar tissue forms and the ends become harder to bring back together. Early repair is usually more straightforward and often gives better function. Delayed cases can still be treated, but they may need a more complex reconstruction with a graft.

Go to emergency care immediately if

  • There is an open wound over the knee
  • The knee or leg looks badly deformed, suggesting a fracture or dislocation
  • The foot is numb, cold, pale or you cannot move your toes
  • Pain is severe and uncontrolled
  • You also hit your head or have other injuries

What to do now

Keep the knee straight, use ice wrapped in a cloth, elevate the leg and avoid putting full weight on it. A simple splint or knee immobiliser, if available, helps. Do not try to walk it off or test it repeatedly. Then arrange an urgent assessment with a knee surgeon. At Aman Hospital in Doha, Dr. Gelber examines the knee, arranges imaging if needed and, if a complete rupture is confirmed, plans timely repair.

Frequently asked questions

I can still walk a little. Can it still be a rupture?

Yes. Some people can shuffle with the knee kept straight. The key test is whether you can actively lift the straight leg or straighten the knee against gravity.

Can I wait until after a holiday or work trip?

It is usually better not to. A delay of several weeks can make repair harder. Discuss your travel plans with the surgeon quickly.
