Follow-up appointments after knee surgery

Quick answer

After knee surgery, follow-up usually starts with a wound check at around two weeks, then reviews at roughly six weeks, three months and later, depending on the operation. Scans are arranged only when they will change the plan. Call sooner for fever, wound problems or calf pain, advises Dr. Pablo Gelber at Aman Hospital in Doha, Qatar.

Why follow-up matters

Follow-up appointments are where problems are caught early and where rehabilitation is adjusted to your progress. Your surgeon checks the wound, the movement, the strength and the stability of the knee, compares them with what is expected at that stage for your operation, and decides what you can safely do next.

They are also your chance to ask about work, driving, prayer, travel and sport. Even if you feel well, it is worth attending, because some issues, such as slowly increasing stiffness, are easier to treat when noticed early.

Typical review points

The exact schedule depends on the operation, but a common pattern looks like this:

  • Around 10 to 14 days: wound check, removal of stitches or clips if needed, and a review of swelling, pain and early movement.
  • Around six weeks: range of motion, walking, muscle control and, for many operations, permission to drop crutches, drive or return to desk work.
  • Around three months: strength, function and the next stage of rehabilitation.
  • Six months and one year: often added after larger operations such as ligament reconstruction, osteotomy or knee replacement, especially when planning return to sport.

Some patients need extra visits, and others fewer, depending on how recovery goes.

What happens at a review

Expect your surgeon to look at the wound or scar, measure how far the knee bends and straightens, watch you walk, test the thigh muscle and, where relevant, check the stability of a repaired ligament. You may be asked to score your pain and function.

Bring your physiotherapy notes, your current medicines and a short list of questions. It helps to note how far you can walk, how the knee feels on stairs and anything that worries you, so the appointment focuses on what matters to you.

Scans after surgery

Not everyone needs imaging after knee surgery. X-rays are commonly used after operations involving bone or implants, such as fracture fixation, osteotomy or knee replacement, to check alignment and healing.

An MRI is not routine after most operations, because the scar tissue and healing changes can be difficult to interpret. It is usually reserved for a new injury, new mechanical symptoms such as locking, or symptoms that are not improving as expected. If a blood clot is suspected, an ultrasound scan of the leg veins may be arranged urgently.

When to call sooner

Do not wait for your next appointment if you notice any of the following. Contact the team on +974 4400 4400, by phone or WhatsApp, and if you cannot reach them quickly, go to the nearest emergency department:

  • Fever, chills or feeling generally unwell.
  • Redness, heat, discharge or opening of the wound.
  • Calf pain or swelling of the whole leg.
  • A sudden increase in pain or swelling, or a new feeling of the knee giving way or locking.
  • The knee becoming steadily stiffer instead of looser.

For chest pain, sudden breathlessness or fainting, call 999 immediately.

If you live far away or travel

Many patients in Qatar travel for work or to visit family, and some come to Doha from elsewhere in the region. Tell the team your plans before surgery so the key reviews, especially the early wound check and the six-week review, can be timed around them.

If you travel between reviews, keep copies of your operation note, discharge summary and any scans, and continue your home programme. For non-urgent questions or to rearrange an appointment, you can use phone or WhatsApp on +974 4400 4400, or email qatar@drgelber.com. Reviews take place in person at Aman Hospital in Doha.

Frequently asked questions

Who removes my stitches?

Usually the surgical team at the first review, around 10 to 14 days. Dissolving stitches do not need removal but are still checked. Ask before leaving hospital what applies to you.

Do I need an MRI after my knee operation?

Usually not. An MRI is arranged only if there is a new problem or recovery is not progressing as expected, because routine scans rarely change the plan.

How long will I be followed up?

From a few weeks after a simple arthroscopy to a year or more after ligament reconstruction or knee replacement. Your surgeon will explain the plan for your operation.

My knee feels fine. Do I still need to come?

Yes, ideally. Reviews check things you may not notice yourself, such as subtle loss of straightening or muscle weakness, and guide the next stage of rehabilitation.

Can I message the team between appointments?

Yes, for non-urgent questions use phone or WhatsApp on +974 4400 4400 or email. For emergencies, call 999 rather than sending a message.
